Fort Defiance

Thank you for visiting Fort Defiance: Home of William Lenoir.  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which works to preserve and share the life and times of William Lenoir and his 1792 historic home.

“Closed this weekend, January 7th and 8th due to the winter snow storm. Hwy. 268 is not a major highway and is usually cleared after other major roads. Please stay safe and warm”.

 We are open for tours:

April through October

Thursday – Saturday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Sunday 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Last tour is usually 1 hour before closing


November – March

Saturday 10 – 4 and Sunday 1 – 4

Weekends only or by appointment.


 Admission: $7.00 adults. $5.00 children (5 – 15), children under 5 free





Relic hunting and/or the use of a metal detector is prohibited on the grounds of Fort Defiance.  Removal of any artifacts from the grounds will result in prosecution.

  1. We looked for over an hour trying to locate Fort Defiance with no luck, this site is poorly marked to say the least.

    • David,

      I’m not sure where you were coming from. We have a brown historic highway sign on 321, another at the bridge at the turn for 268 and a sign stating Fort defiance half mile ahead. We also have a sign at the entrance on 268. Were you coming from the Wilkes county side or the caldwell side?
