  1. Becky, can you make sure and email me your details for the October education datesso that I can pass it to our Homeschool group?

    • DeAnna,

Below is the letter that went out to the schools with the LHD’s field trip info.

      Dear Educator,
We hope your school year is off to a great start and we hope 2016-17 will be as great a year for you as it will be for us. We are thrilled to announce that we will be greatly reducing the cost of our annual Living History Days Hands-On Program from $7 to $2 per student. We recently received a grant from the NPS for the Every Kid in a Park campaign. This project was made possible by a grant from the National Park Foundation through the generous support of donors from across the country. It is their goal to have every 4th grader in the country to participate in the 100th anniversary of the National Park System with a visit to a park for outdoor activities.
We are receiving this grant because we are a certified site on the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, so our emphasis will of course be the march to King’s Mountain during the Revolutionary War. We’ll focus on the life of the militia in the backcountry of the NC frontier and the families they left behind to defend the home front. The dates for this program will be October 5th, 6th, and 7th. It is our goal and that of the National Park Service to have every 4th grader in Caldwell County attend this program. We are reserving a limited number of funds to help those students who do not have the resources to participate. If you have a student who cannot participate due to lack of finances please call us to discuss their options.
We are still putting the final touches on the stations but will send out information to you as soon as possible. We will again rotate through approximately 8 stations with hands on activities. We have some really unique things plan for this year’s program which will require more immersion in the program by each class and the students. You will again be mailed a teacher resource guide prior to your visit and each class participating will receive the book “Before Liberty” written by Roy Thompson.
With the lowering of the cost of admission this year we expect greater than usual attendance. We are offering this to the Caldwell County School system first. However we will, as we have in the past, accept home school groups and classes from neighboring counties after a certain date. So please, to assure you get a spot for this program book early. Please call us at 828-758-1671 as soon as possible to schedule your class or if you have any questions. Our office hours are Thursday through Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 1-5. We eagerly await your attendance.

This calendar goes out to Caldwell Chamber members once a week.

    • Yes, I think Matt Underwood is adding it. He’s is chairing the committee. I’ll check and see if he had added yet.

  3. Hi Becky,
When they are finalized, can you email the details of the Hands on History program?

    Thank you.

    • Donna,

I apologize for the delay in response. We have a huge problem with spam on our email right now and have to sort through thousands of emails. I have a new tech working on rectifying the problem. We are in the middle of some major repairs at the fort this year and haven’t posted any events due to the fact we don’t know when the paint and repairs will be finished. It has taken much longer to get the interior plaster work and repairs done than we counted on. We are trying to work tours around this issue. Hopefully we can go back to our regular schedule next year.

    • We are and are working on the details and pricing. Information should be available in the next day or 2. We are waiting on pricing information on the oysters.
