Historic Fort Defiance is one of the best kept secrets in Western North Carolina. This restored 1792 home of General William Lenoir was lived in continuously by the Lenoir family through 6 generations. Considered to be one of the most unique restorations in the country the house still contains more than 300 pieces of original furnishings and artifacts. To ensure the house is properly preserved and promoted, a nonprofit organization was formed in 1964 after the purchase of the home for restoration. Fort Defiance Inc. receives no state or federal funds for operations and/or maintenance. The organization relies on daily visitation, living history programs, memberships and fundraising events. We need your help to keep the doors of Fort Defiance open to continue to tell the story of William Lenoir and the Lenoir Family.
